The three new G series models are powered by the single-cylinder developed for the previous F 650 models, but now optimized for even better performance and minimum weight. The upgraded engine now develops 53 hp at 7,000 rpm, reaching maximum torque of 44 ft-lb at 5250 rpm. The engine's well known virtues of superior reliability, motoring refinement, economy, and environmental friendliness have been enhanced to an even higher standard than ever before.

A lighter crankdrive and a number of other modifications have resulted in more power from the four-valve engine. The rear wheel on all three models is driven by an O-ring chain.

The bridge-type tubular frame made of steel with cast aluminum side sections and the bolted-on aluminum rear frame, together with the rear-wheel swing arm made of cast light alloy and a number of other high-quality components comprise the suspension and running gear of the G 650 X models series - all components are the same on all three models.

A particularly low weight was achieved for a motorcycle in this class by using intelligent lightweight technology with a high degree of overall integration of the various components. The modified, lighter alternator cover made from magnesium is a completely new design.

The varied set-ups and versions of the upside-down telescopic fork as well as the rear suspension elements give each model its own character and ride features. The Xmoto features a spring strut adjustable for length. The dimensions and styles of the wheels are tailored to the intended purpose of each model: the Street Moto uses 17 inch cast light-alloy rims.

The brake systems also differ from one model to another. The Xmoto uses a four-piston caliper with a 12.60 inch disc. A feature truly unique in this class of highly specialized single-cylinder motorcycles, but quite natural on a BMW, is the optional light and compact two-channel ABS for even greater braking performance. The ABS anti-lock brake system does not restrict the ambitious sport rider wishing to enjoy some enthusiastic riding away from traffic or on the race track, because the system can be deactivated on demand.

All the G 650 X models present a compact vehicle. The slim line design, particularly of the frame, bench seat and side paneling, plays a crucial role in creating a bike that offers both playful and extremely agile handling. Off-road, it is an essential requirement for enabling the rider to adopt a relaxed standing position and to have freedom of movement in all directions. On road, it facilitates both a sporty super-moto riding style and relaxed riding over longer distances. The fuel tank is located under the bench seat, which provides a lower center of gravity. The wide, tapered aluminum handlebars from Magura (model EX) allow all three G 650 X models to be easily and playfully steered; the clamps are rubber-mounted to minimize vibrations.

The G 650 X series share the majority of their electrical details. The new cockpit is sized proportionally and compact. The easy-to-read display contains a digital speedometer and mileage counter plus two trip mileage counters, a clock and battery voltage indicator. White turn signals and an LED rear light come as standard. The classic round headlamp was chosen for the G 650 Xcountry, while the Xmoto and Xchallenge both have a new asymmetrical bilux headlamp.

As is the standard with BMW motorcycles, the G 650 X models may be customized with a wide range of accessories and special features tailored to each model.
